The Academic Tutor provides academic assistance one-on-one and/or in a group setting to students enrolled in specific courses. The role involves meeting with students during scheduled times to assist them in learning course material, facilitating student learning by establishing a supportive environment, and helping students identify gaps in their understanding of course concepts. The tutor promotes group tutoring session attendance and implements group interaction activities to enhance the learning experience. Additionally, the tutor shows students how to learn, offers various approaches to help them understand course concepts, and promotes self-reliance by guiding them to utilize textbooks and other resources effectively.

  • Meets with students during scheduled times to assist them in learning course material.
  • Facilitates student learning by establishing a supportive environment and helping students identify gaps in their understanding of course concepts.
  • Promotes group tutoring session attendance by regularly notifying students of session schedule.
  • Implements group interaction activities to make sessions helpful to all students.
  • Shows students how to learn, along with what to learn.
  • Offers a variety of approaches or methods to help students understand course concepts.
  • Promotes students' self-reliance by referring them to textbooks, notes, and other course information sources.
  • Asks open-ended questions to check for students' understanding.
  • Works with students to develop effective problem-solving and critical thinking strategies.
  • Completes scheduled tutor training and participates in additional training and meetings as needed.
  • Communicates tutoring methods and results by completing session feedback forms.
  • Assesses own work performance and adherence to tutoring objectives by completing regular self-evaluations.
  • Maintains regular contact with tutor coordinator to discuss tutoring issues and receive assistance and feedback.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Must have overall GPA of 2.5 or higher and no serious student conduct/disciplinary history.
  • Transcripts must show successful completion of the course(s) to be tutored, with a grade of A or B earned within the past one to two years.
  • Strong academic competence in the courses tutored, as determined by course instructor.
  • Well-developed interpersonal communication skills and study group facilitation skills.
  • Ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to learn and employ effective tutoring methods to meet tutor program objectives.
  • Ability to respond sensitively to diverse student needs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written English.
  • Experience facilitating group learning experiences.
  • Successful completion of the courses tutored.
  • Knowledgeable about study skills and group communication theory.
  • Part-time Classified employees begin at Step 1 of the salary schedule.
  • Placement at a higher step on the salary schedule is not negotiable.
  • Step increases are subject to eligibility and occur at the end of the Fiscal Year in July.
  • Monthly payment on the last day of the month.
  • Pay incentive for proficiency in conversational Spanish.
