About the position

The Polysomnography Technologist is responsible for preparing the lab for patients, patient set up and performing basic and advanced diagnostic sleep studies. Assists in the orientation and training of other staff in the department. The position involves performing standard and advanced diagnostic/therapeutic sleep studies while remaining compliant with department policy and guideline standards. The technologist will perform procedures such as Electroencephalograms, Electrooculogram, Electromyogram, Respiratory effort, Airflow, Oximetry, End Tidal, and PAP Device flow. They will also provide professional explanations of procedures and acquire patient history, ensuring proper identification and communication with patients. Additionally, the role includes technical recording, education and professional development, safety maintenance of equipment, and applying troubleshooting methods as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the lab for patients and set up for sleep studies.
  • Perform standard and advanced diagnostic/therapeutic sleep studies.
  • Conduct procedures like Electroencephalograms, Electrooculogram, Electromyogram, and others.
  • Provide clear explanations of procedures to patients.
  • Recognize, document, and eliminate artifacts during studies.
  • Obtain at least 10 CEUs related to sleep yearly.
  • Maintain and clean equipment after use.
  • Apply troubleshooting methods for equipment issues.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of universal precautions in patient care.
  • Lift, move, or transfer patients using proper body mechanics.

Requirements

  • Graduate of CAAHEP Polysomnography Program or a minimum of 6 months of experience in sleep medicine or respiratory procedures.
  • Registered Polysomnography Technologist by the LSBME.
  • Registered as a Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or Registered Sleep Technologist.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Current license with the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners as a Licensed Respiratory Therapist.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with sleep disorder certification.
