About The Position

The position involves performing basic to advanced inpatient and outpatient sleep disorder studies, including preparation and testing of patients, data tabulation, test scoring, and report preparation. The role requires selecting and applying monitoring electrodes, preparing PAP mask fittings, scheduling tests, educating patients and physicians on sleep medicine, and following procedures to document baseline values. The technician will score sleep/wake stages, generate accurate reports, implement interventions for patient safety, and perform various sleep tests and therapeutic interventions. The technician will also be responsible for equipment setup, maintenance, and serving as a technical resource for students and staff.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) registration or Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) certification.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorders Specialty (RRT-SDS) certification.
  • Advanced training beyond High School that includes completion of an accredited or approved program.
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in a polysomnographic technician role.
  • Must meet the AASM standard of 80% proficient in scoring with interscore reliability.
  • Proficient at sleep study scoring.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Selects and applies special monitoring electrodes, bands, thermistors, and other monitoring probes to appropriate areas of the patient's body.
  • Prepares positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fittings.
  • Schedules and discusses the test process with patients, ensuring their knowledge of the process and answering their questions.
  • Educates physicians and patients on sleep medicine.
  • Follows sleep procedures to establish and document baseline values such as body position, movements, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates.
  • Scores sleep/wake stages and generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Implements appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic intervention.
  • Performs procedures and therapeutic interventions such as auto servo ventilation (SV) titrations and multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT).
  • Performs setup and scoring of home sleep tests.
  • Monitors study-tracing quality to recognize and eliminate artifacts during tests.
  • Prepares and calibrates equipment for testing.
  • Keeps equipment in clean operating condition and reports malfunctions.
  • Monitors equipment supply levels and maintains appropriate equipment.
  • Serves as a technical resource and role model for students and staff.
