About The Position

Great Basin College is seeking highly qualified individuals for a full-time, tenure-track political science instructor position at the main campus in Elko, Nevada. The position begins in August of 2026. The qualified candidate will have the ability to develop and teach upper-division courses for the online Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (BASS) program. Topics may include globalization, migration, hegemonic world systems, US international relations, comparative politics, media and politics, etc. This individual will also be responsible for teaching and overseeing multiple sections of online and live PSC 101 Introduction to American Politics, a course that includes content that meets mandated Nevada State and United States Constitution requirements. Great Basin College has a mission to serve the higher education needs of rural Nevada in a large service area. As such, teaching requires extensive use of online and other distance education technology.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a master’s degree in political science or a closely related field is required; a PhD is preferred.
  • A specialty in international/global systems is preferred.
  • Experience teaching college-level political science courses is required.
  • The ability to develop, design, deliver and assess political science courses is essential.
  • The ability to teach Introduction to American Government and the Nevada Constitution is essential.
  • The ability to develop and teach upper-division political science courses for bachelor's degree in social sciences program (BASS) in accordance with program objectives is essential.
  • Experience teaching online using learning platforms such as Canvas is preferred.
  • A student-centered approach and understanding of diverse learning styles is essential

Responsibilities

  • Develop, deliver and assess political science courses at all levels using the Canvas online format as the primary delivery method.
  • Develop and teach upper-division political science courses related to national and/or global issues and processes to meet the needs of the Bachelor of Arts in Social Science.
  • Perform all duties as required of all full-time GBC faculty (full workload of 15 units per semester, advising, committee work, maintain office hours, etc.)
  • Help hire, coordinate, manage and mentor part-time faculty
  • Work fully and professionally as a team member who collaborates and cooperates with the tenure committee, department, and broader college entities
  • Continue professional development professionally and pedagogically
  • Advise and recruit students
  • Conduct administrative duties related to teaching and program development including strategic planning and assessment
  • Travel by car throughout the GBC service area as needed
  • Support the mission of the college to “Transform Lives Through Education”
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee’s spouse or domestic partner.
