About The Position

Join the Scripps Political Team in Washington, D.C., for a dual semester (Summer & Fall term) internship that delivers real-world experience in the media landscape during the 2026 election cycle. This role is adjacent to political campaign activity, offering direct exposure to the systems and processes that ensure our broadcast stations remain legally compliant. You will play a hands-on role in the daily tracking of broadcast compliance and in upholding federal standards set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The ideal candidate understands the importance and seriousness of federal compliance, with or without a background in law. This is a hybrid role, in office three days per week.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program (Marketing, Communications, Business, Government, Law, or related fields) at an accredited college or university.
  • Rising Junior or Senior status
  • Availability to work June 2026 through November 3, 2026.
  • Fall semester course load must accommodate a 20-hr. work week during business hours.
  • A strong understanding of the importance and seriousness of federal compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • An analytical mindset and comfort working with data and reporting tools.
  • A proactive, team-oriented attitude and an eagerness to learn.
  • Demonstrated integrity and discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to commit to a part-time schedule for both Summer and Fall, including being in the Scripps D.C. office three days per week.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web/cloud-based applications.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate into the daily tracking of broadcast compliance, assisting in monitoring which political orders require documentation.
  • Monitor the FCC public file and work quickly to maintain accuracy within the 24-hour deadline.
  • Complete significant data entry, with daily and weekly activity fluctuating based on election race activity.
  • Coordinate with team members to ensure seamless coverage and handoffs between shifts.
  • Summarize and flag any compliance concerns to the Political Compliance Coordinator and assist with resolution.
  • Participate in team meetings, providing updates on political compliance status.
