About The Position

The Political & Policy Strategist at SEIU Local 503 is responsible for designing and leading campaigns focused on policy objectives within legislative and administrative contexts. This role involves collaboration across various departments, including political, communications, and research, to drive organizational change and effectiveness through staff development, accountability, and equity and inclusion. The strategist will engage in political action, training, and education, while managing relationships with lobbyists and coordinating grassroots lobbying efforts.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of public policy affecting members.
  • Organizing experience and lobbying experience.
  • Experience drafting legislation and coordinating lobbying campaigns.
  • Ability to maintain relationships with legislators and prepare testimony.
  • Experience with policy analysis and understanding of budgeting processes.
  • Experience managing relationships with contract lobbyists and consultants.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lead campaigns around policy objectives in the legislature and administrative arenas.
  • Organize internal and external political actions and training.
  • Work with union leadership to develop and implement the political and legislative agenda.
  • Participate in planning and implementing political action inside and outside workplaces.
  • Coordinate in-the-capitol lobbying activities with political staff and consultants.
  • Manage relationships with contract lobbyists and consultants supporting the legislative program.
  • Oversee member lobby days program and engage in the union's candidate electoral program.
  • Motivate members to participate in political programs and recruit leader activists.
  • Participate in political actions such as canvassing, phone banking, and fundraising.
  • Develop, analyze, and research public policy related to public sector workers and state budgets.
  • Represent the union in community coalitions and strengthen relationships.
  • Create and implement plans to pass campaigns using coalitions and community engagement.
