About The Position

Advanced Energy United's West Policy Team is seeking a summer policy intern to support legislative and regulatory work in Arizona and New Mexico. This internship offers hands-on experience in state energy policyand stakeholder engagement during a critical period for clean energy advocacy in the Southwest. Working directly with our Sr. Policy Principal for Arizona and New Mexico, the intern will contribute to active legislative campaigns, regulatory proceedings, and stakeholder coordination efforts across both states. This role is ideal for students interested in state policy, energy markets, government relations, or public interest advocacy who want to see how policy gets made—and who aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves and help make it happen.

Requirements

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Interns will work a hybrid schedule and therefore must be located in the DC, MD, VA area for the summer, a commutable distance to our DC office.
  • A final project will be due from each intern and presented to the organization at the end of the program.

Responsibilities

  • Legislative Research & Analysis: Analyze energy-related legislation in Arizona and New Mexico; prepare bill summaries, policy memos, and other reports; conduct research on policy models from other states and best practices in transmission, distributed energy resources, and grid modernization.
  • Stakeholder Coordination Support: Assist with coalition partner communications and meeting coordination; maintain stakeholder contact lists and engagement tracking; prepare briefing materials for legislators, regulators, and coalition partners; support member company outreach and education efforts.
  • Regulatory Proceedings: Monitor Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) and New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) dockets; research technical issues related to utility programs, grid planning, and energy markets.
  • Event Planning & Communications: Support planning and logistics for stakeholder briefings, roundtables, and legislative education events; draft talking points, one-pagers, and fact sheets for policymakers and media; maintain internal project tracking systems and meeting notes; coordinate with communications team on press materials and social media content.
