About The Position

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is seeking a motivated student for an internship within the Office of the Board of Commissioners. This role offers hands-on experience in research, policy analysis, and strategic engagement on key public issues including water infrastructure, environmental sustainability, climate justice, and public health. This is a unique opportunity for students who are passionate about public service, environmental equity, and inclusive governance. The ideal candidate is currently enrolled in or has recently completed a degree program in public policy, political science, law, or a related discipline. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills are essential, along with a foundational understanding of government operations and policy development. Effective communication, collaboration, and a sincere commitment to social justice and community advocacy are also highly valued.

  • The ideal Policy Intern will possess strong research and analytical abilities, with the capacity to collect, interpret, and synthesize complex policy data.
  • Attention to detail and critical thinking are essential for assessing legislation and preparing well-informed policy briefs.
  • Clear and effective communication—both written and verbal—is key to presenting findings and recommendations.
  • Candidates should be highly organized, capable of managing multiple priorities, and comfortable operating in a dynamic government setting.
  • A genuine commitment to social justice, environmental sustainability, and community engagement is strongly encouraged.
  • Applicants must be a current graduate or undergraduate student seeking a degree in communications, marketing, liberal arts, sociology, political science or history.
  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2026/2027 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.
