About The Position

The Policy Associate supports The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals by working on project teams to design and deliver policy objectives and serving as liaison between The Nature Conservancy and policy makers. The Policy Associate will engage in state, federal, and regional policy priorities. Duties include daily contact with public officials and policy makers on matters pertaining to administrative and legislative actions. They build and facilitate internal networks, coordinate meetings, agendas, and presentations. They influence the outcome of policy at the federal, state, and local levels. They develop strategic partnerships with relevant agencies, conservation organizations, and industry to advance the organization’s conservation agenda. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Fluency in English.
  • Experience presenting to and/or communicating with business, government or legislative staff and/or program leadership.
  • Experience in designing, implementing and directing multiple complex projects and ensuring program accountability.
  • Communications experience including preparing and presenting project proposals and developing written communications.
  • Experience working with corporate or NGO partners, and government agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Experience working in a Legislative office or other state government.
  • Familiarity with social, economic, and political conditions and issues in California.
  • Experience coordinating projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams, operating units and functions to achieve optimal results.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication, negotiating and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Frequent contact with the Legislature on matters pertaining to environmental policy.
  • Tracking and managing TNC’s legislative portfolio.
  • Crafting position letters on public policy and public funding.
  • Building and facilitating internal networks, coordinating meetings, agendas, and presentations.
  • Leading policy communications for our conservation programs and donors, including through newsletters, websites, social media, etc.
  • Influencing the outcome of policy initiatives at the state level.
  • Developing strategic partnerships with relevant partners, including with non-government organizations, to advance the organization’s conservation agenda.
