About The Position

The Policy and Government Relations Director (Government Relations Officer) at King County's Department of Local Services (DLS) is a strategic leadership role responsible for advising the Department Director on legislative matters, driving the department's legislative agenda, and advocating for policies that benefit unincorporated communities. This position serves as the primary liaison between the department, elected officials, community organizations, and other government entities, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of four years' experience in senior-level policy analysis and intergovernmental relations.
  • Demonstrated experience with state, federal, and local legislative processes.
  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing political strategies for governmental agencies.
  • Proven track record in developing and analyzing public policy within a governmental context.
  • Strong ability to serve as a liaison for elected officials and maintain productive relationships.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Strong strategic focus, analytical skills, and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven negotiation, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree in Public Administration or a related field.
  • Previous experience as a liaison and/or policy advisor for elected officials.
  • Experience building relationships with elected officials and community leaders in Seattle and King County.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal advisor to the Department Director on legislative matters.
  • Drive the department's legislative agenda and cultivate partnerships.
  • Advocate for policies that enhance the welfare of unincorporated communities.
  • Oversee the development of legislative materials such as reports, motions, and ordinances.
  • Coordinate internal responses to policy inquiries and provide briefings to policymakers.
  • Lead internal planning meetings with relevant county departments to align initiatives.
  • Conduct preliminary policy research and analyze relevant federal legislation.
  • Develop and advocate for DLS's legislative agenda in collaboration with the King County Executive's office.
  • Negotiate amendments to legislation and advocate for the Executive's position with Council members.
  • Represent King County's DLS legislative strategy in meetings with elected officials and staff.
  • Attend Council and Committee meetings as appropriate and coordinate with the Executive's Council Relations Director.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $133,681.60 - $169,436.80 per year.
  • Work schedule typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Exempt from overtime pay provisions under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
