About The Position

The New York City Mayor's Office is responsible for overseeing city services throughout the five boroughs, coordinating public agencies and departments, and managing public property. The Office of the First Deputy Mayor oversees the City's housing, economic development, budget, planning, city operations, and workforce agencies, and works to create a more vibrant and equitable New York City. The Office seeks a talented Policy Advisor for Tenant Protection who will work closely with the Executive Director for Tenant Protection, the Executive Director for Housing, and the First Deputy Mayor to better support tenants in partnership with the team and other relevant agencies and offices across the entire portfolio.

Requirements

  • You have a bachelor's degree with 3+ years of work experience in a relevant field (or 6+ years with a graduate degree).
  • You are a results-driven leader who can effectively drive policy and culture changes to ensure smooth coordination across various parties.
  • You can work independently and within a fast-paced environment, as well as thrive in a collaborative and supportive team.
  • You are a self-starter who positively contributes to a learning culture and collaborative team and is willing to perform the full range of tasks required in a dynamic and rapidly responsive organization.
  • You can quickly absorb complex concepts and communicate them in a concise manner.
  • You have thorough knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • You have exceptional written, oral communication, and presentation skills.
  • You have experience working with agencies who work with tenants or on tenant issues.
  • You have experience and/or interest in tenant issues, including but not limited to housing quality and enforcement, tenant rights and protections, or community and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Tenant Protection Cabinet (TPC), an interagency effort formed in 2024 to coordinate across agencies to better serve tenants by creating pathways to renter-focused programs and services, and to ensure safe and fair housing conditions.
  • Review and evaluate legislative proposals at the City, State, and Federal levels with agencies and government affairs staff. Support any legislative needs for tenants in partnership with City Hall, intergovernmental affairs, and agencies.
  • Coordinate with City Hall leadership and staff, City agency leadership and staff, and other stakeholders within City government to drive alignment on tenant affairs, through continued leadership and coordination on tenant affairs and issues.
  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement with tenant organizations and tenant service providers to foster a relationship between City government, tenants, providers, and advocates that is responsive to and inclusive of community feedback.
  • Support qualitative and quantitative research in connection with policy proposals, legislation, funding, and initiatives. Identify and track key metrics to define and monitor the success of work.
  • Regularly prepare briefing memoranda, provide background research and information, coordinate meeting planning and assistance, and respond to correspondence from constituents or elected officials.
