About The Position

The Office of the First Deputy Mayor is seeking a qualified individual to serve as the Policy Advisor for Education. Working closely with the Senior Advisor for Education, this individual will serve as a trusted advisor to the Office of the First Deputy Mayor on all education and youth matters related to New York City Public Schools and the School Construction.

  • Do you have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university?
  • Do you have an associate degree from an accredited college or university along with two (2) years of experience with administrative, analytic, coordinative, supervisory or liaison responsibilities?
  • Do you have a four-year high school diploma, or its educational equivalent approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization along with four (4) years of experience as described in question "2" above?
  • Do you have a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that described in questions "1," "2," and/or "3" above?

Responsibilities

  • Managing education policy initiatives day-to-day, determining key touchpoints, and keeping leadership informed of developments and decisions needed.
  • Preparing briefings for key stakeholders and ensuring the appropriate communication of pertinent and sensitive education-related information.
  • Tracking project-related documents, including schedules, project plans, presentations, meeting agendas, minutes, and status reports related to education initiatives.
  • Assessing education initiatives nationwide to identify best practices and potential models applicable to local priorities.
  • Representing the First Deputy Mayor’s Office at meetings with stakeholders, advocates, agency leadership, staff, and internal and external committees to develop and sustain positive relationships and networks; gather information, opinions, and attitudes; identify stakeholder needs; provide interpretation and clarification; develop response options; and generate cooperation and buy-in for education policy initiatives.
  • Supporting engagement with education advocates, community-based organizations, parents, and other external stakeholders to inform policy development and implementation.
  • Working closely with the Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) team to support coordination and engagement with elected officials at the city, state, and federal levels on education-related matters.
  • Analyzing and making recommendations on special projects related to education that raise issues and/or concerns.
  • Working closely with relevant agencies, including New York City Public Schools and the New York City School Construction Authority, and generally supporting education policy and capital planning efforts out of City Hall.
  • Reporting to the Senior Policy Advisor to the First Deputy Mayor for Education.
  • Performing additional responsibilities as required.
