About The Position

The Police Sergeant is responsible for performing complex administrative and protective service work, supervising police officers, and ensuring the effective operation of the police department. This role includes overseeing various activities such as conducting inspections, managing evidence, and responding to emergencies. The position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to maintain effective communication within the department and with the public.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; Associates or Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred.
  • 6 years of Law Enforcement experience and some supervisory experience.
  • Possession of Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate or eligible to receive it within six months of appointment.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
  • Possession of FEMA ICS-100 and ICS-700 certifications and ability to obtain ICS-300 within six months of appointment.
  • Extensive knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and operation of motor vehicles.

  • Experience in budget preparation and administration.
  • Knowledge of local government purchasing and property management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a squad of police officers on an assigned shift.
  • Conduct inspections of police vehicles and oversee the evidence room.
  • Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints.
  • Issue citations for traffic violations and investigate traffic accidents.
  • Prepare and review subordinate officer paperwork, reports, and court documents.
  • Serve warrants and make arrests; testify in court.
  • Provide police escorts and direct traffic; perform residential and commercial checks.
  • Assist with the recruitment and selection of department personnel.
  • Inspect, issue, and maintain inventory of department issued equipment.
  • Conduct investigations of criminal incidents and secure crime scenes.
  • Establish effective contacts with the public and other departments to gain information related to criminal activities.
  • Assist with various in-service and special training programs.
  • Review and approve work orders and vehicle maintenance requests.
  • Perform work during emergency or disaster situations as assigned.
