The University Police Sergeant is a member of the Police Department leadership team. The function of the University Police Sergeant is to provide leadership and supervision to University Police Officers, Campus Safety Officers and Campus Safety Assistants assigned to their shift team. Additionally, the University Police Sergeant functions as a working member of the shift by assisting to maintain security and safety for assigned areas, effectively responding to requests for service and enforcing applicable state and local laws and University policies. Police Sergeants are an integral part of the department's overall community policing strategy. Police Sergeants are part of the University's team of first responders equipped to assist in various emergency and non-emergency situations.

  • Police Sergeants may be required to work overtime on an as needed basis and may be called upon to perform other assigned duties as required.
  • Police Sergeants must maintain a high level of proficiency in the use of police equipment including the handling and use of firearms and be capable of using deadly force as appropriate based on the laws of the State of Illinois and Department policy. Duties may entail other special assignments of similar complexity.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and have a high school diploma
  • Must be certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board as a full-time Police Officer.
  • Must possess a minimum combined five years of experience as a full time law enforcement officer or a professional supervisor.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to walk, run, climb, provide assistance to persons in distress, operate required equipment (including police bicycles and various weapon systems), and work outdoors in a variety of adverse weather conditions
  • Must be able to work with flexible schedules involving evening, weekend and holiday work.
  • Ability to successfully complete various required departmental training programs (including police bicycle and defensive tactics).
  • Ability to send and receive information with necessary optical, auditory and manual dexterity.
  • Must pass a psychological exam, basic skills assessment and personality profile.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must pass a background investigation including a fingerprint check and polygraph exam. Candidates must not have any felony convictions or serious misdemeanor convictions.
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Previous experience as a police supervisor.
  • Three to five years of experience as a police officer.
  • Previous experience in campus law enforcement and / or student development.
  • Proficiency in common business software applications: word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, email, etc.
