About The Position

The Le Sueur Police Department is seeking a full-time Sergeant to join our team. Under the direct supervision of the Police Chief, the Police Sergeant supervises full-time and part-time officers, preserves law and order, protects life and property, and enforces law and ordinances in a manner which will always command public respect and confidence. Assists the Police Chief in directing and coordinating all activities of the Police Department. Along with current Sergeant, supervises the department in the absence of the Police Chief.

  • Thorough knowledge of the Criminal Code, City Ordinances, rules of arrest, and search and seizure to assure legally accepted procedures are communicated and practiced.
  • Ability to react calmly and decisively in emergency situations and make sound decisions and provide strong leadership.
  • Ability to plan, evaluate, instruct, and direct the work of subordinates in a manner that commands respect and results in effective police work.
  • Ability to maintain a favorable climate within the department that motivates personnel to work to their full potential.
  • Associate of Arts / Law Enforcement Concentration
  • Minnesota POST license or be eligible to receive licensure
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as Police Officer or public safety related position
  • Must possess a valid Minnesota Driver’s License or the ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Must satisfactorily pass a physical and psychological evaluation.
  • Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background examination.
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as assistant chief, including direction and supervision of the department in the absence of the Chief.
  • Assures that all rules, regulations, department practices, procedures and process are followed to assure that department standards are followed and maintained at a high level.
  • Investigates all types of criminal activities, provides crime scene processing, and collects, identifies, and properly marks all evidence at the crime scene.
  • Leads the criminal investigative process by completing case follow ups, conducts interviews of witnesses, suspects, and victims, files and executes search warrants, collects, documents, and processes evidence, writes comprehensive police reports, reviews police reports of patrol officers.
  • Works with community members to identify public safety issues, and problems and concerns and to resolve the issues, problems and concerns using sound methods of problem resolution.
  • Determines whether an arrest should be made and how much force should be used, while using procedures that will not violate the suspect’s rights.
  • Makes detailed records and reports of cases and appears in court to testify on criminal actions and arrests.
  • Performs all functions normally completed by a patrol officer, with minimal supervision.
  • Supervises all officers and reports to the Police Chief on the actions of officers and conditions of patrolling.
  • Oversee and monitor the specialized units within the police department including, but not limited to: field training coordinator, background investigations, criminal investigations, supervision of predatory offenders, community outreach, and talent acquisition.
  • Recommends changes to improve the efficiency of the officer and their performance and makes the work schedule of officers and dispatchers.
  • Coordinates training with BCA and vendors relative to the use of the department records management system and BCA file access for all officers. This work is coordinated with the Police Records Technician.
  • Responsible for the acquisition and maintenance of the department computer technology. Serves as liaison between professional IT contractors and the department on a regular basis and assists in or conducts troubleshooting of department computer systems.
  • Verify all staff are update to date on all POST related training including use of force, firearms, taser, emergency vehicle operation, and any other mandated POST board learning objectives.
  • Provides information to department personnel on local ordinances, state statutes, federal laws, departmental policies and procedures and other legal guidelines.
  • Supervises, motivates, and disciplines staff. Leads monitors and continually evaluates overall performance of subordinates. Makes work assigned adjustments. Manages personnel in accordance with personnel rules.
  • Actively participates in the decision-making process supporting City goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates by personal example the integrity, ethics, and excellence in work performance that are expected from everyone in and attached to the organization.
  • Orients assigned personnel to all organizational policies and procedures, clearly communicating essential accountabilities and expected performance outcomes so individuals may proceed with certainty in their respective positions.
  • Creates a work environment in which individuals are motivated to accumulate additional skills and competencies and seek opportunities for further growth and development.
  • Administers all organization policies in a legal manner, fully documenting all incidents and actions taken as a member of the supervisory/ management team and an agent of the organization.
  • Writes grant applications as needed.
  • Attends regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Performs the physical and mental demands of the position.
  • Effectively and respectfully communicates and interacts with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers, including the ability to make public presentations.
  • Participates in Professional Staff Development. Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency. Attends and participates in professional organizations. Associates with agents and departments from other cities and states to learn about and maintain professionalism.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned or apparent to achieve the goals and objectives of the Police Department.
