About The Position

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the classified supervisor position of Police Sergeant. Under the direction of the Chief of Police, the Police Sergeant will plan, organize, and supervise the work of assigned personnel and perform a variety of technical tasks. This includes instructing and assisting subordinates in their duties related to investigation and surveillance work to detect or prevent crime. The position requires in-person work as the district does not have a remote work policy.

Requirements

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for diverse backgrounds.
  • Any combination equivalent to an Associate's degree AND four (4) years of experience as a peace officer.
  • Possess California POST Advance Certificate within sixty (60) days of hire.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates within sixty (60) days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of department goals and objectives.
  • Establish schedules and participate in the development of training materials.
  • Interview, select, and hire employees; supervise, assign, direct, and schedule work activities.
  • Evaluate the performance of assigned personnel and recommend promotions and rewards.
  • Approve monthly time and attendance records and utilize automated software for scheduling.
  • Address and resolve a wide variety of concerns and complaints.
  • Counsel employees and address performance problems through corrective disciplinary action.
  • Plan, coordinate, and arrange for appropriate training for assigned personnel.
  • Assist in planning, prioritizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of District Police Officers.
  • Provide on-the-job training for District Police Officers and department staff.
  • Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities and recommend improvements.
  • Act as liaison with departments on campus and other outside agencies.
  • Carry out patrol, enforcement, and investigative duties.
  • Mediating interpersonal disputes and handling confrontations.
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with co-workers, other District employees, and students.
  • Maintain proficiency in law enforcement functions and remain current with case and statutory law.
  • Assume the role of 'Incident Commander' at significant incident scenes.
  • Operate a variety of police equipment and perform related duties as assigned.
