About The Position

The Police Recruit position at the City of Memphis is designed for individuals seeking to begin a career in law enforcement. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Twenty-four (24) semester hours from an accredited college or university, or two (2) years of verifiable work experience within five (5) years from class start date, or two (2) years of active or reserve military experience within five (5) years from class start date.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident who is an honorably discharged veteran.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age upon completion of the Police Basic Training Program.
  • Must not have felony convictions or other disqualifying criminal history.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver license.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the supervision of Memphis Police Academy staff to learn and apply law enforcement concepts.
  • Perform general law enforcement duties including patrolling assigned areas and apprehending suspects.
  • Control traffic and write reports related to law enforcement activities.
  • Provide public information and maintain records and material evidence.
  • Attend training classes and meet mandatory training requirements.
  • Exercise and comprehend rules, regulations, and policies of the MPD Training Academy.
  • Execute basic criminal investigation principles and techniques for patrol-related activities.
  • Use basic interview skills to obtain information from suspects, victims, and witnesses.
  • Operate a patrol vehicle and use appropriate weapons/equipment safely.
  • Apply defensive tactics and minimal levels of force to control subjects in patrol-related situations.
  • Recognize controlled substances and request assistance in handling materials and paraphernalia.
  • Provide first-aid assistance during emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking to solve problems in patrol-related situations.
  • Maintain tact and courtesy when interacting with individuals and confidentiality with sensitive information.
