About The Position

The Glendale Police Department is offering various hiring bonuses for applicants. A $5,000 bonus is available for those hired as Police Officer Recruit, $7,500 for out-of-state Lateral Police Officers, and $10,000 for in-state Lateral Police Officers. The testing process for applicants has been streamlined to occur in one day, which includes a Physical Assessment Exam, Written Essay, and Oral Board Interview. The testing date is set for February 22, 2025, and selected applicants will receive an email invitation by February 6, 2025, to self-schedule their testing date. The Glendale Police Department serves a culturally diverse community of approximately 250,000 residents and employs 459 sworn officers and 163 civilian employees. New officers typically serve in one of the patrol divisions for their first two years before applying for specialty assignments such as SWAT, Bomb Squad, K-9, and others.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent for Police Officer Recruit.
  • High school graduate or equivalent and have an active Arizona POST Certification for Police Officer.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of modern police work and law enforcement methods.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and city laws governing police operations, custody of prisoners, search and seizure, and rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of general city law enforcement problems and geography of the city.
  • Knowledge of problem-oriented policing and community agencies.
  • Skill in the use of police equipment including vehicles and weapons.
  • Skill in using computer, electronic, and audio equipment.
  • Ability to analyze situations, maintain composure, and make effective decisions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned area of the City by automobile, motorcycle, on foot, or bicycle for crime prevention and enforcement of laws.
  • Responds to calls for service involving crimes such as robberies, assaults, homicides, and narcotics violations.
  • Secures the scene of a crime; makes arrests; books prisoners.
  • Responds to hazardous materials incidents and traffic accidents; investigates traffic accidents; detects impaired drivers; administers first aid; directs traffic and requests medical assistance.
  • Prepares reports to accurately document information.
  • Participates in problem-oriented policing efforts by identifying problem areas, recommending and implementing solutions, and monitoring results.
  • Performs suicide prevention interventions; transports mentally ill patients; performs surveillance operations.
  • Performs a variety of general and specialized criminal investigations involving property and persons crimes; gathers evidence; preserves crime scene; prepares cases for prosecution.
  • Provides training on gang-related issues, firearms, defensive driving, defensive tactics, impact weapons, and other related police topics.
  • Writes and executes search warrants.
  • Serves court orders, arrest warrants, and mental health orders.
  • Selects, directs, trains, and maintains canines.
  • Appears in court as the State's witness and delivers testimony.
  • Provides police services at various special events in the City.
  • Presents public relations programs to school age and adult groups; participates in community functions.
  • Performs assigned personnel functions in recruitment, training, and record keeping.
  • Performs squad supervisory duties as required; maintains police supplies at stations.
  • Performs specialty duties such as interpreting and peer counseling.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
