About The Position

The GS-8 Lead Police Officer (Sergeant) at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for assisting in the management and direction of assigned duty personnel to ensure a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations and properties. This role involves leading a team of police officers, overseeing daily operations, and ensuring compliance with federal laws and VA policies in various jurisdictional settings, including medical centers and clinics.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
• One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-07 level.
• Experience ensuring a safe and secure environment across various VA settings.
• Knowledge of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques.

Nice To Haves

• Experience as a military police officer or in law enforcement in recreational environments.
• Knowledge of criminal investigative duties.

Responsibilities

• Leads a team of Police Officers and administrative staff.
• Directs day-to-day lead policing operations and non-lead policing assignments.
• Works in collaboration with the Police Supervisor to carry out the overall mission.
• Assigns, distributes, reviews, approves, and disapproves employees' assignments.
• Monitors and reviews the status and progress of the work and makes workload adjustments.
• Consults with the immediate supervisor for assistance on problems and backlogs.
• Participates in the selection of staff and coordinates staff training.
• Leads law enforcement assignments to preserve peace and prevent crime.
• Coaches and mentors current and new employees.
• Conducts investigations and apprehensions of individuals suspected of offenses.
• Serves as part of the suicide prevention program and intervenes in crises.
• Responds to calls for police assistance and investigates incidents.
