The University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community who study, research, work, and live on the Coral Gables Campus. A police officer has the primary responsibility to provide Protection of life and property to all citizens on a 24-hour basis. A police officer, as assigned at the discretion of the Chief of Police, may serve as a uniformed patrol officer, detective, community police officer (e.g. “Canes Resource Officer”), a directed patrol officer, canine officer, or a problem solving team officer. A police officer has the primary responsibility to provide protective and law enforcement services on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. In addition, a police officer has responsibilities to provide special services to the University community consistent with the mission of the University and the Police Department. The police officer position is designated as essential personnel and will continue to work during periods where the University may suspend normal operations due to events such severe weather, natural disasters and/or hazardous situations. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification (May do some or all of these duties based upon assignment).
