Police Officer The Police Officer is responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing laws and university policies, and ensuring the safety and security of campus facilities. This intermediate-level position operates with increased autonomy and supports the overall mission of campus law enforcement through patrol, investigation, emergency response, and administrative duties. Officers act under general supervision and may lead or assist during shifts in the absence of a sergeant.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • High School graduate or complete GED program.
  • 21 years of age.
  • US citizen.
  • Utah POST Category 1 certification, required (per state statute 53-6-203) OR actively enrolled in an academy program to obtain POST certification.
  • Maintain Utah Peace Officer Standards and training requirements each year
  • Completion of Utah Peace Officer Standards & Training.
  • Completion of BYU Police Department FTO Program.
  • 3 years of experience at BYU as a certified BYU Police Officer or equivalent experience in a comparable agency.
  • 6 years of experience at BYU as a certified BYU Police Officer or equivalent experience in a comparable agency. All certifications, proficiencies, and skills for Officer II must be met.
  • 9 years of experience at BYU as a certified BYU Police Officer or equivalent experience in a comparable agency (at least 1 of the 9 years must be at BYU). Required time in position may be reduced by 1 year with the possession of one of the following: Bachelor’s degree Master’s degree 4 years of full-time military experience at a rank of E5 or higher Note: A specific degree or military experience substitution may only be used once within the Step series. All certifications, proficiencies, and skills for Senior Officer must be met.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a campus or community policing environment.
  • Training or certification in accident investigation, emergency response, or crime prevention.
  • Leadership experience or ability to supervise in the absence of a sergeant.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patrol duties by vehicle, bicycle, and on foot to enforce laws and university regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies, alarms, and calls for service including accidents, hazards, and medical incidents.
  • Conduct arrests, investigations, and follow legal procedures for documentation and evidence handling.
  • Provide support at special events (e.g., sports, concerts) and maintain traffic and crowd control as needed.
