About The Position

We are currently seeking dedicated and skilled individuals to join our team as full-time Police Officers. As a Police Officer for the City of Oneonta, you will be responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing laws and regulations, and building positive relationships with the community. The ideal candidate will have a strong sense of integrity, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to public service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • APOST certification is required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think quickly and act decisively in high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to perform the duties of a police officer, including chasing suspects and handling firearms.
  • Commitment to ethical conduct and integrity.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous law enforcement experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas, both by car and on foot, to prevent and detect criminal activity, and perform security checks on properties.
  • Collect evidence, prepare reports, and assist various emergency services and law enforcement agencies.
  • Enforce City, State, and Federal laws; operate the radio according to FCC and departmental regulations.
  • Ensure security of businesses, schools, and other buildings during and after business hours; respond to criminal acts.
  • Manage traffic control at intersections, accident scenes, fire scenes, crime scenes, and school crossings; provide police escort services.
  • Enforce the Uniform Traffic Code (Title 32), assist motorists, and conduct drug and alcohol testing.
  • Monitor and report malfunctioning traffic signals and control devices to the Department of Public Safety.
  • Engage with the community through outreach programs and public safety initiatives.
  • Attend regular training sessions to stay updated on law enforcement techniques and best practices.
