Major Duties Under general supervision, the Police Officer is responsible for a wide range of responsibilities that support the safety, security, and overall well-being of the campus community. The role involves high visibility, proactive engagement, rapid response to emergencies, detailed documentation, and careful execution of law enforcement procedures. Officers operate in dynamic environments, interacting with students, faculty, staff, and visitors while ensuring adherence to laws and maintaining a positive, service-oriented presence. Implement community policing concepts through quantifiable and measurable activities to create police/community partnerships, thereby gaining confidence and building credibility with the campus community. Patrol the campus by vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot for criminal activity, traffic and parking violations, safety hazards, and citizens in need of assistance. Conduct crime suppression activities. Police officers respond to and provide medical assistance with equipment such as First Aid kits, AEDs, etc., to injured and ill people on campus and at traffic accidents near or on campus. Promotes programs and services, such as participating at fairs and orientations, conducting risk reduction presentations to students, faculty, staff, parents, and the greater community… Serve as the first to respond to a report of a crime in progress. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Applicants must satisfactorily meet the current employment standards of the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and CSUN Minimum Standards of Employment and Training.
  • Must be free of any felony convictions: have good moral character; be a high school graduate or equivalent; meet pre-employment requirements, including physical exam with drug testing, psychological exam, and pass a comprehensive POST background investigation.
  • Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
  • Successful completion of the California POST Basic Course and possession of a California POST Basic Certificate are required.
  • LICENSE: CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community-policing principles and the ability to build trust through proactive partnerships and problem-solving.
  • Skilled in evaluating potential criminal activity, identifying risk factors, and recommending effective prevention strategies.
  • Able to conduct field interviews, assess crowd dynamics, and recognize conditions that may escalate into safety concerns.
  • Strong ability to respond promptly to medical emergencies and hazardous conditions, applying proficiency in First Aid and CPR, and coordinating effectively with medical personnel.
  • Skilled in identifying environmental hazards such as chemical spills or unsafe conditions and initiating corrective actions.
  • Proficient in patrol operations across various modes of transportation.
  • Knowledge of campus safety best practices, including identifying safety hazards, security deficiencies, and unauthorized activity during building and grounds patrols.
  • Ability to remain informed about crime trends and implement prevention strategies.
  • Skilled in delivering safety education, promoting departmental programs, and engaging with students, staff, faculty, parents, and visitors.
  • Ability to conduct thorough investigations by assessing active crime scenes, interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, and determining appropriate enforcement actions.
  • Skilled in preparing clear and accurate documentation, including reports, citations, and arrest paperwork.
  • Competent in evidence handling, crime scene preservation, and safely transporting arrestees, juveniles, or individuals experiencing mental-health crises while adhering to legal and procedural requirements.
