About The Position

Mercer University’s Police Department is looking for new Police Officers to work on our campus in Atlanta, Georgia. Our officers are sworn law enforcement officers with full police powers and work within the jurisdiction of our campus community. Responsibilities: The Police Officer will perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety duties to protect life and property on the Mercer University campus. Responsibilities include enforcing federal, state, and local laws; responding to calls for service; preventing and investigating crimes; maintaining public order; and providing general assistance to the campus community in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Mercer Police Department. This position operates within the framework of community-oriented policing, ensuring a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and visitors. The Police Officer will interact consistently with supervisors, co-workers, Mercer employees, students, and the general public. The Mercer University Police Department adopts a community policing strategy which promotes problem solving techniques to reduce fear of crime and improve quality of life and police services, through a proactive reliance on community resources that addresses crime causing conditions.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required
  • Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification in Georgia (or eligibility in Georgia), which must be in Law Enforcement
  • Candidates must also be in good standing with POST
  • Must be able to perform the full range of patrol officer duties, including but not limited to: Walking on active patrol, sitting, and standing for extended periods; Running after violators or fleeing individuals; Driving for extended periods, including emergency or pursuit driving; Climbing stairs, fences, or other obstacles; Crawling or maneuvering in confined spaces; Moving or lifting furniture and other heavy objects as needed; Maintaining physical control of combative individuals.
  • Must be able to adapt quickly from stationary observation to rapid physical activity when circumstances change suddenly.
  • Must be capable of performing duties in a variety of weather conditions and work environments.
  • Must be proficient in the operation of police equipment, including firearms, handcuffs, police radios, and related tools.
  • Must be able to monitor and operate video surveillance systems.
  • Must be able to perform law enforcement and security duties such as: Writing clear, accurate incident and case reports; Collecting fingerprints and other basic evidence; Conducting GCIC and NCIC checks on individuals or vehicles; Issuing parking citations and decals; Directing traffic and placing cones or tape to control traffic flow; Checking condition of patrol vehicles and other equipment; Locking and unlocking doors and gates; Securing firearms checked in by the public; Assisting other law enforcement agencies as requested and available; Transporting university personnel and property; Escorting sick, injured, or distressed individuals; Performing vehicle jump starts and other campus assistance tasks; Directing emergency response vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances; Maintaining cleanliness and basic upkeep of department spaces or equipment; Entering and updating case information in police databases.
  • Must be able to use sound judgment and professional restraint to de-escalate tense or potentially dangerous situations.
  • Must be trained in use of police equipment such as firearms and hand cuffs.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly, professionally, and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Must be able to delegate tasks and, when necessary, enforce discipline to maintain team cohesion and effective operations.
  • Must demonstrate strong decision-making, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Must be able to adapt to unforeseen schedule changes to ensure adequate campus coverage.
  • Must demonstrate integrity, accountability, and commitment to the mission, goals, and objectives of the Mercer Police Department.
  • Candidates must have ability to work shifts, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Candidates with prior police related experience are desirable.
