About The Position

Under supervision of a Field Training Officer, Senior Police Officer or Police Supervisor the Police Officer enforces law, maintains order, and protects life and property. The work involves learning Departmental Policy and Procedure, State and Local Laws, Court Rules and Procedures, Basic Investigation and Reporting, Law Enforcement Methods and Theory. There is a 12-month probationary period from employment start date (or for Police Academy cadets, from graduation date from the Allegheny County Police Academy).

Requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen, per Pennsylvania Act 120.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university upon hire.
  • Prior Police work or prior military background without a bachelor's degree will not be considered.
  • Must be age 21+ upon hire.
  • Must pass physical, written, and oral exams plus a comprehensive background investigation.
  • If hired, must reside within 25 air miles of the Mt. Lebanon Public Safety Building (555 Washington Rd. 15228), within 12 months of start of employment

Responsibilities

  • Handles police incidents, emergency situations, traffic accidents, traffic enforcement duties and other related activities.
  • Perform general patrol duties, responds to emergencies and conducts traffic stops.
  • Drive emergency vehicles, including under stressful conditions.
  • Intervene in and control human conflicts.
  • Develop and maintain positive community and interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to work in stressful conditions involving emergencies and dangerous circumstances.
  • Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high standard of ethics and integrity.
  • Ability to communicate well, express ideas, and explain information effectively.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Understands and carries out oral and written instructions.
  • Exercise independent judgment in determining reasonable suspicion to detain, probable cause to search and arrest, and when to use force and the degree of force.
  • Successfully qualify in the use of firearms and weapons approved for use by the Department.
  • Work shifts as assigned.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.
