About The Position

The Police Officer at Volunteer State Community College is responsible for enforcing state, local, and federal laws, as well as college policies and procedures. The officer will provide a variety of security and enforcement services to promote and maintain a safe campus environment. This role includes performing foot and vehicle patrols, responding to emergencies, investigating incidents, and assisting the campus community with various needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Graduate of an accredited police academy and certified for P.O.S.T certification in Tennessee.
  • Meet the requirements of TCA 38-8-106 and TCA 38-8-107.
  • Prior law enforcement experience as a full-time certified officer within the past three years.
  • Must complete an annual department authorized in-service training course.
  • No felony convictions or serious violations of laws.
  • Possess a valid Tennessee driver's license.
  • Good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation.
  • Pass a medical examination, psychological evaluation, and field training program.
  • Proficiency in firearms and non-lethal weapon operation.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Three years of law enforcement experience.

Responsibilities

  • Promote lawful behavior and protect the welfare of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Perform foot and vehicle patrols to monitor behavior and secure buildings.
  • Respond to radio dispatches and emergency calls.
  • Investigate criminal offenses and document preliminary investigation reports.
  • Make arrests and assist in the prosecution of law violators.
  • Enforce traffic and parking regulations.
  • Assist students and faculty with questions and directions.
  • Perform CPR, First Aid, and use AED equipment as needed.
  • Develop partnerships with the campus community.
  • Operate law enforcement equipment and maintain records.
  • May oversee temporary employees and represent the department at meetings.
  • May perform dispatch functions and work overtime as needed.
