About The Position

The Police Officer at MIT Police Department is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of the MIT community. This role involves collaboration with various campus stakeholders to address safety concerns and promote a culture of mutual respect. Officers will patrol assigned areas, respond to emergencies, conduct investigations, and participate in ongoing training and professional development.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a full-time MA state or municipal police academy or MPTC-approved equivalent training.
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Driver's license.
  • MA Class A License to Carry.
  • Eligibility for appointment as a Massachusetts Special State Police Officer.
  • Massachusetts POST Commission certification or ability to gain POST certification.
  • Demonstrated organizational and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with crisis intervention, conflict resolution, report writing, handling emergency procedures, and community policing principles.
  • Must qualify in the use of firearms.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of law enforcement experience (college/university police department).
  • An associate's degree or higher in criminal justice or related subject.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a culture of mutual respect and understanding with students, researchers, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Patrol assigned areas of campus on foot, bicycle, or vehicle to deter and detect criminal activity.
  • Respond to emergencies and provide support during special events, demonstrations, and other campus activities.
  • Conduct initial criminal investigations and gather evidence.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies as necessary.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development.

Benefits

  • Base hourly rate range: $31.19 - $40.85.
  • Compensation remains at 42.5 hours when there are less than five regularly scheduled shifts.
  • Employment contingent upon satisfactory background checks, pre-employment medical examination, and drug and psychological screening.
