About the position

Police Officer Trainees receive top-notch training and mentoring to prepare them for a career in law enforcement with Ventura Police Department. This non-safety, non-sworn position will participate in a 26-week California's Commission of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) accredited program. Police Officer Trainees also receive additional department training which provides an overview of the criminal justice system, various laws and procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, and physical fitness. They learn the philosophy of community-based policing as a collaboration between law enforcement and community residents that emphasizes solving problems together.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a 26-week POST accredited training program.
  • Receive additional department training on criminal justice system and law enforcement techniques.
  • Learn community-based policing philosophy.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or GED required.
  • Must be 21 years of age on or before date of appointment as a Police Officer Trainee.
  • Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must meet California POST medical and psychological standards.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class C driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • College coursework in Criminal Justice or social sciences preferred.
