About The Position

The Police Officer Recruit is a non-sworn trainee position responsible for attending and successfully completing an accredited Police Academy and obtaining a Colorado Peace Officer’s Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certificate. Recruits acquire foundational knowledge, skills, and abilities required for law enforcement service, including patrol procedures, traffic control, investigation fundamentals, community policing, and emergency response. Upon successful completion of all academy requirements and attainment of P.O.S.T. certification, the incumbent becomes eligible for appointment to the Police Officer I classification at the discretion of the hiring Police Commander.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or GED equivalent
  • A valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain Colorado P.O.S.T. Certification is Required.
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification is Required.
  • Able to obtain the following ICS Certifications: IS100 200, 700 & 900 within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to regulate attention; to plan; to understand, remember, and apply information; to effectively interact with others; to concentrate and maintain pace; and to adapt or regulate one’s behavior.
  • Ability to proficiently read, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, statistical and mathematical abilities and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write complex reports and distill information for many audiences.
  • This position requires close, distance and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to hear an average conversational voice in a quiet room, using one or both ears, at a distance of six (6) feet.
  • Ability to hear sounds and signals indicating work and safety necessities.
  • This position requires standing, walking and sitting for periods of time.
  • Utilization of hands and fingers to operate office computer keyboard and equipment required.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch if needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to one hundred (100) pounds as needed and frequently lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Effective proficiency in the use of computer software and applications, office equipment, and professional telephone use.
  • The ability to adequately type quickly with few to no errors is also very important.
  • This position will often require multi-tasking in the use of computer, phone, and office equipment while interacting with clients.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized coursework or training in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related public safety fields is highly valued.
  • Prior military service, public safety experience, volunteer work, or community engagement experience is highly valued.
  • Proficiency in non-English languages is highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and supports a positive, collaborative culture within the City organization, fully embracing the City’s values and expectations.
  • Attends and successfully completes an accredited Police Academy, including all required classroom, physical, and practical training components.
  • Obtains a Colorado P.O.S.T. Certificate within departmental timeframes.
  • Learns and applies academy-taught competencies, including: Police vehicle operations, conflict resolution, use of force, local procedures, report writing, leadership, community-specific issues, cultural diversity, legal authority, individual rights, officer safety, communication skills, ethics, and self-regulation.
  • Learns to enforce traffic laws, municipal ordinances, and state statutes under close supervision.
  • May assist in maintaining public peace, controlling traffic, and responding to criminal and non-criminal incidents.
  • May observe and assist in investigating accidents, domestic incidents, thefts, assaults, child welfare concerns, suicides, narcotics violations, missing persons, and related police matters.
  • May administer CPR, AED, and first aid during emergencies.
  • Maintains awareness of wanted persons, stolen property, quality-of-life issues, and criminal activity.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with citizens, coworkers, and Academy staff.
  • Attends required training courses; maintains current knowledge of departmental and legal standards.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
