About The Position

The Police Cadet, sponsored by the City of Ypsilanti Police Department, is a dynamic and critical position within the organization. The incumbent will undertake one of the recognized police academies within the state of Michigan, preparing them for future roles as entry-level Police Officers. This program provides a valuable pathway into law enforcement, offering professional development and a commitment to community safety.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Willingness and capacity to learn and apply law enforcement principles and procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Effective collaboration and a commitment to working as part of a team.
  • Pass the EMPCO test to be considered for employment and provide proof of successful completion at the time of application.
  • Candidates must have already completed the MCOLS reading, writing, and physical agility tests.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and ethics.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license may be required.
  • Willingness to adapt to various working conditions and environments.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on an overtime basis.
  • Ability to analyze situations and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background investigation, psychological evaluation, interview process, and drug/alcohol screen, with no felony convictions and/or disqualifying criminal history.

Responsibilities

  • Successfully complete the training program at a recognized police academy within the state of Michigan, ensuring adherence to all curriculum and performance requirements.
  • Actively engage in learning and skill development, gaining a deep understanding of professional policing principles and procedures, philosophy, enforcement techniques, case law, and criminal procedures.
  • Under the guidance of experienced training officers, cadets will be trained in all disciplines of professional policing.
  • Foster positive community relations through participation in community outreach programs, events, and public service activities.
  • Accurately document observations, incidents, and interactions, assisting with case preparation.
  • Perform in the Police role in various functions, including traffic stops, evidence handling, and public safety tasks.
  • Perform a range of administrative tasks, such as data entry, report filing, and document management.
  • Maintain, inspect, and manage departmental equipment and property.
  • Uphold departmental policies, codes of conduct, and ethical standards.
