About the position

The part-time Police Officer position involves performing a variety of duties related to law enforcement and crime prevention. Under general supervision, the officer will provide courtroom security, coordinate inmate transfers, patrol designated areas, enforce traffic laws, and participate in criminal investigations. The role emphasizes community engagement and customer service, requiring the officer to integrate community policing activities into their work. The position may require working on holidays, nights, and weekends, with specific availability needed during weekdays and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Provides general courtroom security and coordinates the transfer of inmates from local holding facility to required court appearances.
  • Patrols designated areas of the City to preserve law and order and enforce traffic laws.
  • Responds to calls for protection of life and property, including public service calls and complaints.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations at incident scenes and collects evidence.
  • Prepares and serves search and arrest warrants; apprehends offenders for crimes.
  • Performs traffic enforcement duties and investigates traffic accidents.
  • Directs traffic at emergencies and special events.
  • Provides assistance or backup support to other officers and emergency personnel.
  • Processes required paperwork and requests status reports through databases.
  • Serves as a liaison and public relations officer for the assigned area.
  • Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Participates in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills.
  • Prepares various reports on activities, operations, and arrests.
  • Testifies in court and prepares evidence for legal proceedings.
  • Answers public inquiries regarding laws and department activities.
  • Receives, searches, books, fingerprints, and transports prisoners.

Requirements

  • Current Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
  • Minimum 2 years Law Enforcement / Patrol experience.
  • Valid US Driver's License and GA Driver's License at time of employment.
  • Successful completion of background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological and medical evaluation, and drug screen.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to write clearly and accurately in English.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and understandably in various situations.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of community policing principles and practices.
