About the position

Norfolk, Virginia is America's most authentic and urban waterfront city. The City of Norfolk's Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of part-time Police Officer in the Central Records Division located at the Police Operations Center.

Responsibilities

  • Performs limited Police functions.
  • Monitors prisoners, both in person and remotely through CCTV.
  • Monitors building security cameras.
  • Monitors alarms for different Police Department facilities.
  • Searches and handles occasional prisoners.
  • Learns and knows the laws pertaining to adults and especially juvenile prisoners.
  • Handles walk-in arrests of citizens who have warrants on file.
  • Learns fingerprinting to assist with after hours printing.
  • Takes occasional offense reports.
  • Maintains various logs and prepares different reports.
  • Answers questions of citizens who come to the front desk and citizens who call the front desk.
  • Works alone and with others, including but not limited to, officers, civilians, and interacting with the public.
  • Assists the ID section of the Central Records Division with 3rd offense checks.
  • Screens citizens entering the Police Operations Center.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes.
  • Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
  • Valid Driver's License (prior to employment start date).
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen (born or naturalized).
  • Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Officer certification.
  • Must successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments.
  • One (1) year of consecutive active service as a certified police officer in Virginia for a municipal, county, and/or Virginia state law enforcement agency.
  • Three (3) years of consecutive active service as a certified police officer in another state of the United States for a municipal, county, and/or state law enforcement agency.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the handling and monitoring of prisoners within Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) guidelines.
  • Experience with reading and writing various reports using Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word.
  • Experience working alone or along with others.
