Candidates hired by the City of El Monte as a Lateral Police Officer are eligible to receive a signing bonus of $15,000, payable in two equal installments: the first payment due at the time of hire and the second payment at the one-year employment anniversary. Under general supervision, the Lateral Police Officer performs a wide variety of patrol and related duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances. The officer patrols areas of the City, conducts surveillance, assists in the preparation of cases, testifies in court, serves in specialized departmental roles as assigned, provides information and assistance to the public, and performs related work as assigned.

  • Perform a variety of community policing duties to maintain a highly visible presence within the community.
  • Patrol an area of the City to observe and address suspicious or potential criminal activity.
  • Respond to emergency calls for service, disturbances, thefts, burglaries, vehicle accidents, domestic disputes, and other incidents.
  • Provide information, directions, and assistance to the public.
  • Observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic situations.
  • Make arrests and serve warrants and subpoenas.
  • Secure crime scenes and evidence; interview suspects, victims, and witnesses.
  • Provide emergency medical attention to the public when responding to calls for assistance.
  • Prepare and maintain reports, logs, records, and accurate files.
  • Conduct comprehensive investigations into felony and high-level crimes.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).
  • Current employment by a California Police Department for a minimum of one year, having successfully completed the probationary period.
  • Specialized training in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • $15,000 signing bonus payable in two installments.
