About The Position

The U.S. Capitol Police is seeking experienced law enforcement professionals for the position of Police Officer (Lateral Transfer). This role involves enforcing federal and D.C. laws, protecting the U.S. Capitol complex, and ensuring the safety of Members of Congress, staff, and visitors. Officers will engage in a variety of police duties, including responding to incidents, conducting investigations, and maintaining public order. Successful candidates will have opportunities for advancement into specialized areas within the department after completing training and probationary requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license.
• Must have completed a recognized police training program (FLETC UPTP, FLETA accredited military training, or CBP training).
• Must have at least 9 months of law enforcement experience post-training at the time of application.
• Must be a U.S. citizen and meet age requirements (21-39 years old at time of appointment).
• Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation, medical examination, psychological examination, and polygraph examination.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in specialized law enforcement areas such as Canine Explosives Detection or Threat Assessment.
• Previous federal law enforcement experience.

Responsibilities

• Enforce Federal and District of Columbia laws and regulations.
• Physically protect the U.S. Capitol complex, Members of Congress, visitors, and staff.
• Preserve law and order and serve as a deterrent to crime.
• Take charge of accidents and crime scenes, restricting access as necessary.
• Prepare reports and testify in court as required.
• Perform protective services and safeguard Federally-owned buildings and property.
• Engage in specialized areas such as Special Operations Division, Dignitary Protection Division, and Criminal Investigations Section after meeting requirements.
