About The Position

The City of La Mesa is announcing an exceptional law enforcement career opportunity for the position of Police Officer - Lateral Academy Graduate. The City offers a Police Hiring Incentive Bonus for lateral officers. Police Officers in La Mesa are responsible for enforcing laws, preventing crimes, controlling traffic, conducting criminal investigations, and supporting various law enforcement programs.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 20-1/2 years of age at the time of application submission.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship.
  • Requires high school graduation, GED, or a two-year or four-year degree from an accredited institution.
  • For Lateral Transfer: Experience as a sworn peace officer in California or equivalent.
  • For Academy Graduate: Graduation from a California P.O.S.T. approved police academy.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.
  • Possession of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy Certificate.
  • Enrollment in a POST-approved academy within three months of graduation.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol designated areas of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent crimes, and enforce laws.
  • Respond to calls for protection of life and property, enforcement of laws, and general public service.
  • Conduct investigations at incident scenes, identify and collect evidence, and interview victims and witnesses.
  • Prepare and serve search and arrest warrants; apprehend offenders for crimes.
  • Direct traffic at emergencies and special events; provide crowd control.
  • Serve as a liaison and public relations officer for the assigned area.
  • Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in apprehending offenders.
  • Participate in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills.
  • Perform administrative duties in support of law enforcement services.
  • Prepare reports on activities, operations, and arrests.
  • Testify in various court hearings and prepare evidence.
  • Assist in receiving, searching, booking, and transporting prisoners.
  • Make presentations to promote crime prevention and enhance public understanding.
  • Perform duties as assigned in specialized roles such as Traffic Bureau or investigations.
  • Train new recruits and document their progress when assigned as a Master Officer.
