About The Position

The police officer position is responsible for providing security for college and personal property at the College through crime prevention activities, patrol, thorough investigation of all reported and suspected criminal activity, and through the enforcement of State laws. This is accomplished by patrol efforts, by possible shift rotation, by interacting with the public in a fair and impartial manner regardless of the situation, and by enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth and regulations of Northern Virginia Community College and VCCS. The NOVA Police Department is established as a college-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain the safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College. As such, all police department employees are subject to short-term and long-term reassignments that may include different locations, rotating schedules, and duties dependent on the needs of the department and/or staff professional development.

Requirements

  • Must have at least 3 years/36 months continuous law enforcement experience commensurate with those of a Virginia law enforcement officer.
  • Be out of law enforcement employment for less than 24 months.
  • Must be in good standing with former employers.
  • Must meet all requirements of 15.2-1705 Code of Virginia.
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successfully pass background investigation.
  • Licensed driver with demonstrated safe driving record.
  • Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services or qualify for the Option 5 Lateral program.
