About the position

This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment. The role involves providing good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintaining positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and ensuring regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. The position requires performing preventive patrol in assigned areas, both in vehicle and on foot, enforcing state and federal laws and City ordinances, and operating a motor vehicle safely in various environmental conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Perform preventive patrol in assigned areas, both in vehicle and on foot.
  • Enforce state and federal laws and City ordinances.
  • Observe for and respond to criminal activity, safety hazards, and traffic violations.
  • Conduct interviews and interrogations of victims, witnesses, suspects, and offenders.
  • Identify, collect, process, package, and log physical evidence.
  • Make arrests on criminal and traffic-related offenses.
  • Use radar equipment and operate vehicles safely.
  • Defend self and others by engaging in physical combat if necessary.
  • Conduct searches of persons, places, vehicles, and things.
  • Become familiar with patrol districts, geographical locations, and known offenders.
  • Conduct security inspections and surveys of buildings and businesses.
  • Handle complaints made by the public and conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations.
  • Seek and serve arrest warrants, search warrants, and other court documents.
  • Assist prosecutors and attorneys in preparation of cases for trial.
  • Testify clearly and truthfully in court.
  • Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Provide traffic control for blocked traffic on streets and highways.
  • Clean and fire a variety of police weapons.
  • Complete an inventory and operational checklist on vehicle/equipment.
  • Type on mobile computer terminal in police vehicle.
  • View crime scenes and identify/preserve physical evidence.
  • Write narrative reports as required.
  • Respond to and deal with domestic disputes.
  • Deal with children of all ages in various situations.
  • Provide interpersonal and business contacts in civil disputes.
  • Direct civilian employees and the public at crime scenes.
  • Determine 'probable cause' in making arrests.
  • Determine when to use less-lethal or deadly force.
  • Search, arrest, and transport suspects.
  • Administer first aid when needed.
  • Act as public relations officer for the city.
  • Attend training as assigned and maintain required skills and licenses.
  • Involved with regular and irregular shift work and shift rotations.
  • Maintain knowledge of current police policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Complete training requirements for various specialized roles.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Citizen of the United States or legally admitted nonimmigrant.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • No felony conviction before selection.
  • Current Certified Law Enforcement Officer with ability to obtain Arkansas certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Pass a comprehensive background investigation.
  • Ability to obtain Basic Police Officer Certificate.
  • Ability to become proficient in using various law enforcement equipment.
  • Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in the use of a computer and related software.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting and moving up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Possess physical and mental stamina to react quickly in emergencies.
