About The Position

The Police Officer position at the University of Pittsburgh Bradford Campus involves enforcing state laws, responding to violations, and engaging in various law enforcement activities. The role requires the officer to respond to telephone calls that necessitate law enforcement intervention, investigate suspicious activities, patrol the campus, and participate in mandated training sessions. Officers will manage traffic, make lawful arrests, and provide testimony in legal proceedings as needed. In this position, approximately 70% of the time will be dedicated to developing essential skills in law enforcement. This includes accompanying experienced officers on foot and vehicular patrols across the university campus, fostering strong relationships within a multicultural environment, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of local, state, and federal laws. The role also involves acquiring skills in police reporting, investigation techniques, and court testimony. The remaining 30% of the time will be spent engaging with potential candidates for the police academy program through phone calls, emails, and department-sanctioned social media accounts. Officers will also attend recruitment events such as career fairs and information sessions at other campuses in Pennsylvania, and they may produce written or video materials that detail their experiences in the police academy and the Pitt Police Training Program. The successful candidate will receive an hourly rate during the academy training, and an educational expense agreement will cover the Act 120 Academy tuition, room, and meal plan. Physical fitness is a critical component of this role, as candidates must pass an entrance exam that includes a 1.5-mile run, push-ups, and sit-ups, and demonstrate safe operation of various vehicles including motor vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and bicycles.
