About The Position

Purpose of Classification: The purpose of this classification is to supervise an assigned shift of officers and Police Sergeants to ensure the protection life and property, the deterring criminal activity, and the enforcement of all local, state and federal laws, statutes and regulations. This classification is safety sensitive, subject to random drug testing in accordance with the County’s Drug & Alcohol Policy.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field; currently classified as Police Sergeant with two years of experience at that rank; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license
  • Must possess and maintain a Basic Law Enforcement certification and at a minimum one of the following Law Enforcement certifications: Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory, or Management.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain additional certifications as deemed necessary.
  • Two (2) years of continuous service as a DeKalb County Police Sergeant leading up to January 2026 application for promotion to Lieutenant and currently be classified as a Police Sergeant.
  • Must be certified in law enforcement by the State of Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training Council (POST).
  • Must possess at least POST Intermediate Certification.
  • The last two (2) recorded performance appraisals must have overall rating of “meets standards” or higher.
  • No more than three (3) preventable vehicle accidents in the past thirty-six (36) months.
  • Applicants who have received (2) or more sustained disciplinary actions that resulted in more than (16) hours of suspension in the past (36) months are not eligible to participate in the promotional testing process.
  • Once an applicant has been placed on an established promotional register and is a candidate for promotion, any subsequent behaviors or conduct that would have disqualified the applicant from participating in the initial promotional testing process will result in their removal from the promotional register.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work
  • Investigates complaints against unit personnel
  • Reviews/corrects reports and documentation completed by assigned staff
  • Performs other department administrative functions
  • Ensures the enforcement of all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations
  • Supervises the detection and deterring of criminal activity
  • Supervises the conducting of investigations
  • Supervises the performance of rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters
  • Supervises the performance of other duties including monitoring and responding to calls for assistance, investigating accidents and reported crimes, interviewing citizens, conducting searches, pursuing fleeing and subduing resisting suspects, effecting arrests, and processing and transporting prisoners.
  • May perform command functions at major accidents, emergencies, and disasters
  • May be assigned to specialized unit or division, such as robbery, homicide, narcotics, special victims, K9, missing persons, homeland security, executive protection, etc.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals
  • Creates/maintains positive public relations with the general public
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio
  • Attends and facilitates shift meetings, training sessions and seminars as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law
  • Operates or uses various equipment associated with law enforcement in order to complete work assignments
