About The Position

Requirements

  • Possession of an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or equivalent units, preferably in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement.
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in a Bachelor's degree program is highly desirable.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in police work, including at least three (3) years at the supervisory level or higher with the Manhattan Beach Police Department.
  • Completion of P.O.S.T. Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Supervisory Certificate is required.
  • Completion of P.O.S.T. Management Certificate within two (2) years of assignment to this classification.
  • Valid Class C California driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of additional law enforcement training programs.
  • Experience in budget management and financial reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the functions of a patrol shift or divisions, including Administrative Services, Traffic, and Investigative Services.
  • Establish goals and objectives; evaluate and resolve issues and complaints.
  • Address personnel issues and ensure training goals are achieved.
  • Schedule, assign, and prioritize work, determining the need for additional staffing and overtime coverage.
  • Review and interpret operating policies, standards, and procedures regarding officer field conduct and calls.
  • Administer contracts and service agreements for the Police Department.
  • Attend division and bureau meetings to ensure issues and needs are resolved.
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate the work of division personnel; recommend disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Engage in law enforcement duty work and act as liaison for collateral assignments.
  • Manage specific administrative functions such as policy development and internal affairs.
  • Conduct audits related to division practices and operations; review and analyze operational procedures.
  • Work with management personnel to prepare the division budget and track expenditures.
  • Prepare, analyze, and present management reports related to division and bureau operations.
