About The Position

The Bureau of Patrol Operations – Lieutenant is a high-level supervisory position. The Patrol Lieutenant commands a platoon within the Bureau of Patrol Operations and is responsible for planning, implementing, and directing programs designed to achieve the goals and objectives of the Patrol Bureau. The Lieutenant provides strategic and daily supervision and management of a unit or division of commissioned police officers and licensed security guards. The Lieutenant also manages the department’s responses to routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services provided to the University. This includes evaluating officer responses, designating assignments, directing resources, and interpreting relevant laws, ordinances, and department policies and procedures.

  • Certifications/Professional Licenses: Police Officer - Missouri Department of Public Safety
  • Work Experience: Sworn Law Enforcement (7 Years), Law Enforcement In A Supervisory Role Equivalent To A Police Sergeant Or Greater (5 Years)

Responsibilities

  • Serves as Watch Commander and organizes and deploys staff assigned to uniformed patrol forces.
  • Assigns personnel in coordination with Patrol Sergeants based on time, area, and workload.
  • Conducts regular inspections of units and areas under command.
  • Analyzes crime and incident reports to determine trends and tactical needs.
  • Supervises and assigns Community Safety Officers effectively.
  • Responds to calls for service.
  • Reviews and approves written reports submitted by patrol personnel for completeness and accuracy.
  • Reviews initial investigations and forwards cases requiring follow-up to the Director of Law Enforcement Operations.
  • Reviews CAD entries and distributes relevant information.
  • Ensures reports and correspondence are accurate and complete and that procedures comply with laws and policies.
  • Develops and implements community outreach programs.
  • Ensures patrol officers maintain certification and supports training, including firearm qualifications.
  • Reviews and approves payroll records for the Bureau.
  • Completes performance evaluations for Patrol Operations Sergeants and ensures evaluations for officers are accurate and timely.
  • Attends meetings with University personnel concerning law enforcement matters, conducts staff meetings, and mentors supervisors and officers.
  • Maintains high standards of professionalism and compliance with University, State, and CALEA regulations.
  • Represents the Police Department at law enforcement meetings and provides information on incidents to University administrators.
  • May conduct trainings, inspections, briefings, internal investigations, performance reviews, and special projects as assigned by the Chief of Campus Police.
