About The Position

The Police Evidence Technician at the City of Tucson’s Police Department maintains evidentiary integrity and chain of custody for legally valid trial evidence. Work is performed under the supervision of the Police Evidence Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months post high school
  • Under one (1) year of directly related experience.
  • Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License

Nice To Haves

  • At least 1 year of experience in law enforcement, warehousing, or retail inventory.
  • Demonstrated skill in use of computer and systems
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides customer service and assists community members with inquiries in person, by phone, and via email.
  • Notifies owners, retrieves and releases property, and schedules property pick-ups.
  • Coordinates viewings with court personnel and investigators.
  • Handles the shipment of evidence to other agencies or citizens as needed.
  • Collects, receives, transports, and secures property and evidence from various law enforcement agencies.
  • Runs reports for accountability to ensure all items are received from the submission lockers, inspects the packaging of all items received, and verifies compliance with evidentiary standards.
  • Generates officer discrepancy notices for improperly submitted property.
  • Consolidates and audits storage locations at the main facility.
  • Operates pallet shrink-wrap machines and heavy lifting equipment as required.
  • Collects and stores hazardous materials and items with biological contamination from drying cabinets, cleans and sanitizes the drying cabinets, and ensures proper storage of items.
  • Works in subzero temperatures in a walk-in freezer auditing and storing critical Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) evidence.
  • Secures vehicles and bicycles in the evidence impound lot.
  • Conducts intake functions in the field at crime scenes as needed (on call-out).
  • Verifies accurate disposal authorizations and documents the destruction of general evidentiary items.
  • Reads and interprets court orders directing the release or disposal of property and evidence.
  • Documents, photographs, and uploads items for disposal into the evidence tracking system.
  • Prepares valuable items for auction and low-value items for charitable donations.
  • Evaluates items no longer needed in evidence to ensure compliance with Arizona State records retention laws and delivers to the records section for archiving.
  • Properly handles and disposes of hazardous materials and scrap-metal items.
  • Handles correspondence, interprets court orders for compliance with laws, and ships property to various entities.
  • Researches cases, performs data entry and sends correspondence through computer systems, and manages property authorizations.
  • Researches property addresses, handles high-volume calls, addresses evidence discrepancies, and processes court documents.
  • Testifies in court to verify evidence processing procedures.
  • Audits items and general storage locations to ensure compliance with evidentiary standards, department policies, and city and state Laws.
  • Conducts firearms background checks prior to release of firearms.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
