About The Position

This position is for a Police Dispatcher with the City of Whittier. The role involves receiving and processing routine and emergency calls, dispatching police and other public service entities, and using various automated law enforcement information systems. Candidates must currently be working as a police dispatcher with a police agency and have at least one year of paid dispatching experience. The position requires working rotating shifts, including early morning days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Successful candidates will serve a minimum one-year probationary period and may receive additional compensation if bilingual in Spanish.

Requirements

  • Must currently be working as a police dispatcher with a police agency.
  • At least one year of paid dispatching experience.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license.
  • Ability to pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination and psychological examination.
  • Must obtain a Dispatch Certificate from California P.O.S.T. within one year of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish (eligible for additional $90 per month).
  • Two years of experience in typing and general clerical work.
  • Experience equivalent to that of a Police Dispatcher I in the City of Whittier.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and processes routine and emergency calls and alarms.
  • Dispatches police and other public service entities as required.
  • Enters, retrieves, and uses data from various automated law enforcement information systems.
  • Coordinates with other emergency service providers as appropriate.
  • Assists in the training of less experienced personnel.
  • Maintains accurate logs of incoming service requests and actions taken.
  • Prepares reports and maintains files necessary for dispatch.
  • Monitors station security, jail & facility cameras, and jail alarms.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the general public and other agencies.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with community organizations and agencies.
