The Community Service Specialist (CSS) position is a full-time role within the Police Department of McAllen, Texas, designed for non-sworn employees. Under general supervision, the CSS performs a variety of routine, non-hazardous tasks both at the Police Department and in the field. This role is crucial for providing and acquiring information, making reports, and performing crime prevention duties. The CSS will be responsible for responding to citizen inquiries and requests for police services related to criminal and civil matters, traffic accidents, and other incidents requiring police action. Additionally, the CSS will refer citizens to other public agencies, provide directions, and offer general assistance as needed. The position requires the ability to distinguish between criminal and non-criminal conduct, prepare and maintain various records and statistical reports, and conduct vehicle checks. The CSS will also be involved in abandoned auto investigations, property inspections for vacationing residents, and assessing businesses and residences for security vulnerabilities. Participation in crime prevention education activities and conducting meetings with community groups is also a key responsibility. The CSS will assist in ordering and maintaining police supplies, provide crowd control assistance, service subpoenas, and support detectives, traffic, and patrol officers as directed. This role is essential for fostering community relations and ensuring public safety through proactive engagement and support. The CSS will work closely with sworn officers and other non-sworn supervisory employees, contributing to the overall mission of the Police Department to serve and protect the community.
