About The Position
The Police Chief is responsible for the planning, organizing, and directing of safety and security for the City of South Haven and South Haven Township, ensuring the protection of lives and property. This role involves the enforcement of laws and ordinances, as well as adherence to public policy. The Police Chief will direct security services and problem-solving efforts through community relations and neighborhood programs. This position is accountable to and serves at the will of the City Manager. In this role, the Police Chief will oversee department officers and civilian personnel, including Information Center staff and Crossing Guards. Responsibilities include preparing, submitting, and monitoring the department budget, as well as authorizing all purchases. The Police Chief will provide direction to staff regarding a wide range of internal or external inquiries and requests, and will guide personnel matters such as recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and discipline of all department officers and civilian personnel. The Police Chief will also direct planning for department objectives, work systems, policies, and procedures, and will perform on-scene evaluations and direction in major or unusual situations. This position requires the approval of various licenses and permits, and the Police Chief will represent the Department to the City Manager, explaining or promoting public policies adopted by the City Council and the practices of the Department. Strong leadership in police-community relations is essential, particularly with a multi-cultural, diverse population. The Police Chief will coordinate special events and staffing with area police departments and develop ongoing relationships with administrators of the police departments, sheriff department, and prosecutor's office. Additionally, the Police Chief will work closely with the City Manager and Human Resources Director to develop, coordinate, negotiate, and administer the contract with the union, as well as to create a wage and benefit program that attracts and retains excellent personnel.
