About The Position

We are looking for the next Burlington Police Officers! This is a perfect opportunity to be paid to attend Basic Law Enforcement Training and receive the necessary education and skills to begin your career in Law Enforcement! About us: The Burlington Police Department is a nationally accredited law enforcement agency that is committed to quality fair and professional police services. The agency is made up of more than 100 sworn officers and 50 professional staff members serving the City of Burlington, North Carolina. Voted the #1 Police Agency in NC in 2024, we serve a growing city of approximately 60,000 residents. What you will do: An employee in this class is responsible for attending Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) classes on a daily basis; listening to instruction, participating in physical fitness training, participating in role play scenarios and taking tests. The employee must have a positive attitude and desire to learn through hard work and good study habits. The work is performed under the observation and review of the Training Lieutenant and other Training officers. This employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement training. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The BLET class will not begin until January 2026. If you are chosen to be hired, you will be required to attend the Alamance Community College (ACC) BLET class and adhere to their schedule. This may include some afternoons/evenings and potentially some weekends. Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or GED Equivalency
  • 20 years of age (by the time you take the state exam in BLET)
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • United States Citizen or Naturalized Citizen
  • Ability to obtain certification as a law enforcement officer by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards Commission after successful training and based on background review.
  • Understand and Apply Knowledge: Learn and apply relevant laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures, ensuring full comprehension and adherence to the law enforcement framework.
  • Effective Communication: Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication and understand how to carry out instructions clearly and accurately.
  • Relationship Building: Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with colleagues, superiors, and the public, ensuring respectful and cooperative interactions.
  • Work Within Structured Environment: Thrive under the strict operational guidelines of law enforcement, maintaining discipline and adhering to policies.
  • Analytical Thinking: Accurately assess situations, swiftly making effective decisions and executing responsible courses of action.
  • Radio and Computer Skills: Learn to operate a police radio system and utilize computer software, improving skills related to essential job functions.
  • Law Enforcement Knowledge: Develop knowledge of modern policing principles and departmental procedures, along with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Emergency Response: Demonstrate the ability and readiness to act quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Firearm and Equipment Proficiency: Gain familiarity and skill with firearms and other law enforcement tools, ensuring effective use in line with safety protocols.

  • Complete assigned tasks with precision and attention to detail, while actively engaging in classroom discussions and activities to deepen understanding.
  • Take thorough, organized notes during lectures and actively engage in role-playing scenarios to practice and apply learned concepts for better comprehension.
  • Submit assignments on time, demonstrating knowledge and understanding, while achieving passing scores on graded tests to showcase mastery of the subject matter.
