About The Position

Participates in point-of-care testing (POCT) duties. Serves as a technical resource person for testing personnel. Works under the general supervision and technical guidance of the Manager or Supervisor of POCT Services. Performs work independently and communicates effectively with other healthcare professionals. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Participates in the evaluation, implementation, verification, and validation of new instrumentation. Performs routine instrument and assay studies. Develops and maintains department standard operating procedures (SOPs) according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines and/or HNL policies. Provides technical in-service and clinical orientation of new staff. Acts as a point person for problem solving at designated locations. Provides technical guidance and resolves problems associated with instrumentation, network hardware and software and documents troubleshooting activities. Performs laboratory testing which may require the broad exercise of independent judgment to include the use of advanced POCT and clinical laboratory instrumentation, data management systems and equipment. Ensures that the department and client POCT programs maintain a state of continual compliance in accordance with applicable regulatory agencies. Participates in inspection readiness activities and on-site inspections. Maintains reagent, quality control and consumable inventory. Orders reagents, consumables and other supplies as required. Performs routine instrument and assay studies to maintain regulatory compliance including coordinating and evaluating proficiency testing. Reviews instrument maintenance records, conducts and reviews quality control and institutes corrective action as needed. Works collaboratively with the clinical teams and HNL colleagues to maintain quality and provide excellent customer service. Performs the duties of a CLIA General Supervisor when management is not on site. Participates in Performance Improvement and continuing education programs. In coordination with the Point of Care Educator, participates in training and competency activities of Point of Care testing personnel. May perform all the duties as outlined in the technologist job description.

Requirements

  • Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for moderate and high complexity testing personnel.
  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology or chemical, physical or biological science and two years of laboratory experience; or Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology with two years of laboratory experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to both write and articulate ideas in an organized manner.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products and various other software including the Laboratory Information System and Point of Care Software.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of Point of Care experience is preferable.
  • Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc).
