About The Position

The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant I (PNA I) at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is responsible for providing entry-level to routine rehabilitative patient services under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This role focuses on delivering quality psychiatric nursing care in an inpatient setting, including emergency and personal care services, therapeutic interactions with patients, and documentation of patient conditions. The PNA I plays a vital role in promoting living and social skills among patients, contributing to their recovery and progress towards a less restrictive environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Valid Texas driver license or ability to obtain it within 90 days if transporting patients.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English to effectively communicate and carry out instructions.
  • Knowledge of patient care techniques and treatment programs.
  • Basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care services under the clinical supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Interact therapeutically with patients and observe, report, and document patient conditions and behaviors.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence.
  • Accompany patients to appointments as required.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to promote a positive workplace.
  • Participate in shift reports and recovery team meetings.
  • Monitor patients for medication administration or treatment, including taking vital signs.
  • Promote safety through continuous environmental awareness and positive engagement of patients.
  • Co-facilitate groups as assigned or requested.
  • Respond to crisis or psychiatric emergency situations using least restrictive interventions.
