A plumber performs skilled plumbing work in the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of District plumbing equipment, devices and fixtures.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
  • Successful completion of a recognized plumbing apprenticeship program or five years of experience in plumbing construction, installation, alteration, or repair work, of which one year must have been at the journey-level.
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.
  • A Los Angeles City Journeyman Plumber License OR A Los Angeles County Certificate of Registration as a Journeyman Plumber.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, climb, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, balance, push, pull, and safely lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Agility to work in confined spaces of buildings, climb high ladders, and work from scaffolds.
  • Normal sense of smell to detect natural gas, stagnant water odors, sewer/septic gas odors, and odors associated with methane gas.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, replaces, maintains, and repairs plumbing systems, equipment, appliances, controls, and fixtures including water, gas, and sewer installations.
  • Works from sketches, drawings, and blueprints to install, maintain, and repair equipment, devices, and fixtures such as vacuum breakers, backflow devices, gas appliance safety controls, gas piping to steam tables, plumbing fixtures, drains, sinks, sumps, circulatory pumps, water heaters, and showers.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs gas piping systems for space heating.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs automatic, semi-automatic, and manually-operated lawn-sprinkler systems.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs air and gas welding systems.
  • Surveys gas safety devices and other plumbing equipment that may need repair or replacement.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs automatic fire-sprinkler systems.
  • Prepares reports pertaining to the testing and maintenance of backflow devices, fire-sprinkler systems, and other plumbing equipment, devices, and fixtures.
  • Prepares job sketches and material and cost estimates.
