Job Summary Under the direction of the Supervising Plumber, this position provides skilled plumbing work in installation, repair, and maintenance of university structures, minor construction and special projects.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma and journey-level plumber skills similar to that acquired through the completion of a plumber’s apprenticeship program required.
  • Valid California driver's license required.
  • Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on University business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
  • The ideal candidate possesses comprehensive knowledge of the Uniform Plumbing Code and applicable Division of Industrial Safety regulations, along with a strong command of plumbing trade tools, equipment, and techniques.
  • They are skilled in reading blueprints, working from plans, rough sketches, and detailed specifications, and fully understand confined‑space entry procedures.
  • Their background includes experience in a university or large public institutional setting, allowing them to navigate complex environments while upholding high standards of safety, professionalism, and technical proficiency.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating a backhoe is desirable.
  • City of Long Beach Health Department certificate for Limited Backflow Prevention Device Tester, highly desirable or must be obtained within six (6) months of hiring date.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain piping systems including water, gas, air, steam, vacuum, storm drains, waste lines, irrigation systems, and related traps and valves.
  • Performs schedule preventive maintenance requiring repair or replacement of plumbing parts or equipment when necessary.
  • Test, certify, and repair backflow preventive devices.
  • Sees that tools, materials, and equipment are on hand or available to the job to function efficiently and economically.
  • Assist in all University functions, responds to emergency situations as required.
